This recognition is a testament to our commitment to crafting exceptional whiskey, capturing the essence of true American craftsmanship and ingredients.

Who We Are

Curiosity can lead you to some incredible places. It’s what called us to Kentucky in 2016 to build a distillery like no other. And we haven’t stopped innovating since. From our glass rickhouses, to our Napa Valley style tour, we’re pushing the boundaries of bourbon like no one has before. Not because we’re particularly fond of bending the rules, but rather to re-imagine what the category could be. One that’s more innovative, transparent and collaborative. Because if you want to create an entirely new bourbon experience, you can never stop exploring. Never stop discovering. Never stand still.

THE JOURNEY

Camping alone in the woods while growing up, your imagination could have a tendency to run away from you. Before you blazes a warm, snapping fire, but beyond that light, there is darkness… and it’s holding its breath. The feeling of being alone against the mysteries of the world is what led to the creation of Ghostwood.

This recipe was inspired by and for that world, when the remnants of summer have given way to the bracing turn of winter and darkness lurks just over your firelit shoulders, causing you to smile with a hidden warmth.

We invite you to enjoy Ghostwood Premium 4-Grain Blended Bourbon Whiskey, honored with a rare Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2023 and 2024. Our Blended Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Chardonnay Casks, earning a Silver Medal, stood out at the 2024 competition. Ghostwood’s Black Barrel Proof Premium 4-Grain Blended Bourbon Whiskey also distinguished itself, receiving Silver Medals at the 2023 and 2024 competitions.

Our name honors Siete Lequas, Pancho Villa’s mare, who traveled with him throughout the country without surrendering, with a persevering and unwavering spirit, and a clear mission: to be true to his word.

at Casa Siete Leguas, the artisanal flavor of Mexico is born, nourished by experience and respect for the authentic processes of tequila.

We are a woman owned small batch craft distillery.

Our journey began when the founder obtained his herbalist certification at the local college. He was distilling essential oils and decided he would build his own still. Then a friend remarked, "You know, you can make whiskey with that." And so, the seed was planted. After ten years as a hobbyist, and with lots of encouragement and praise from friends and family, Underworld Distillery was born. 

As a skilled craftsman, journeyman electrician, and herbalist, our founder designed and built the equipment used to craft all our spirits. You'll even find his original still column hanging on the wall at the distillery. With a true passion for learning and innovation, we continue to hone our craft and have some wild ideas up our sleeve for the future of Underworld Distillery. Bringing Underworld Distillery to life has truly been a collaborative effort. We hold family, friends, and community in high regard here. Through the support of our community, Underworld Distillery became the first and only International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Union distillery in 2022. This honored distinction allows us to provide full benefits and a higher wage to our employees, whom we consider family. 

You may ask, "Why the Underworld?" We have great respect and love for mythology, especially Greek mythology. Pamela Smith, a renowned mythologist, asserted, "Myths are the stories we tell ourselves to explain the world around us and the world within us." Myths are about being human; how we interact, how we love, how we grow, how we die. The cyclic nature of life can be seen in the myths from cultures around the world. Most have some version of the Underworld, albeit by various names. At Underworld Distillery, we are reminded that the seasons change, to appreciate this life we have, and to fill it with love (and great libations, of course!).
